Shinedown recorded an acoustic version of Lynyrd Skynyrd‘s song, Simple Man, and released it on theirĀ  2003 album entitled Leave A Whisper. They also released a video for the acoustic version of the cover and it spread like wildfire. Lead singer, Brent Smith shines (no pun intended) on this one with his emotional release and powerful pipes. After his friend, Dimebag Darrell died in 2004, the song was often dedicated to Darrell as a tribute to his life as it is here in the live video performance.

Alice in Chains performs an acoustic version of Down in a Hole on MTV Unplugged. At the time, this was the band’s first performance in approx 3 years and ultimately became an extremely popular show. Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell are a killer duo when it comes to vocal harmonies and it’s magnified tenfold when heard on acoustic songs. Although the band still tours and puts on great shows with their new singer, music fans will always miss Layne Staley.
