Somewhere out in Fredericksburg, VA, Keller Williams is intently pouring, spicing, stirring, and tasting a mixture of whatever sonic ingredients he happens to have on hand. Equal parts alchemist and musician, the self-taught acoustic guitarist has shared the stage with such notables as The String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Umphrey’s McGee. But he’s at his best as a one-man-band, looping his funky Martin grooves through a delay system so they repeat indefinitely and adorning them with bass lines, two or three vocal harmonies, various drums and shakers, beat boxes, whistles, and other vocal sound effects,¬†and even a little jig. It’s a sight to see. But don’t go running, acoustic purists. This freaker doesn’t need a speaker – he can flat out play.

Covered by every acoustic act and their grandmothers, Stairway to Heaven is the ultimate rock n’ roll cliche. But a cliche gets overused for good reason, as Rodrigo y Gabriela remind us with their highly original acoustic version of the classic tune. The Mexican duo, rooted in Flamenco and thrash metal (hence “Flametal”), have remarkable chemistry – Rodrigo’s lightning leads and Gabriela’s percussive strumming and soundboard tapping make a killer combination. Check it out.
