Back when Dave Grohl hid himself nightly behind a drum set on Kurt Cobain’s stage, he would bring his guitar on the road and write songs when he had down time. He only shared them with a select few, though, and never with the band. “I was in awe of Kurt’s songs,” he later said. “And intimidated. I felt it was best that I keep my songs to myself.” He wrote My Hero long after Nirvana’s demise, and contrary to popular belief has never given any indication that he wrote the song for Cobain. Still, a number of intriguing what-ifs are raised by the image of drummer-Grohl quietly writing music as Kurt goofs around with Courtney Love in the next room.
