Speaking of Nirvana, here they are performing an acoustic version of On a Plain as part of what became one of the legendary shows in rock history, MTV Unplugged in New York. It had been a while since I listened to much Nirvana, and I must say, I had either forgotten or never quite registered just how brilliant Kurt Cobain was as a songwriter. His reinventions of other people’s tunes are pretty great too – Lake of Fire, for example, performed with its authors the Meat Puppets, is, um, better than the original. To say the least.
Check out the turtlenecked and pony-tailed 24-year old Dave Grohl drumming and singing backup. By this time he had already written some of the songs millions would come to know and love following the founding of Foo Fighters in 1995.
